MOE’s Refreshed Guidelines for School-Home Partnership is about setting boundaries to protect the wellbeing of teachers, and building a strong parent-teacher partnership that will support the growth and development of children.
Boundaries are essential not just in a parent-teacher relationship. They are essential in everyone’s lives.
What are boundaries? They are the personal limits that define what we are willing to accept and what we are not, the parameters that define our physical and emotional space, protecting our mental health and wellbeing.
It is good and not mean to set boundaries. The idea of boundaries might seem restrictive but it is, in fact, an expression of care because boundaries are essential for maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life.
They help us to cultivate self-awareness through the invisible lines we draw to define our limits, needs and values.
Through boundaries, we create an environment that protect not just our own wellbeing but also the wellbeing of those around us.
With clear drawn lines, we set clear expectations in our personal or professional relationships. In this way, misunderstandings and conflicts can be avoided.
Conversely speaking, without healthy boundaries, our relationships tend to be difficult or dramatic. We tend to go with other people’s plans. We become a ‘people pleaser’.
So, boundaries are about recognizing our vulnerabilities and preparing ourselves to avoid pitfalls before they occur.
The boundaries that we set give us a sense of control and autonomy over our life.
Thus when we establish limits on our time or energy, we avoid burnout and maintain our ability to support those we care about.
By setting aside time for ourselves and our family, we can avoid the pitfall of constant work, materialism and the rat race.
Setting boundaries, then, is an affirmation that our well-being matters and that we deserve to protect ourselves from harm.
It is about creating frameworks that keep us safe and allow us to thrive. It’s about acknowledging our limitations and taking proactive steps to prevent harm.
Importantly, boundaries help us to focus on what truly matters.
The lines that we draw allow us to create space for the things that are most important to us, whether it be our relationships or our personal well-being.
They help us to prioritize. They help us to make conscious choices about how we spend our time, spend our energy. They help us to create healthy environments in which to learn, develop and grow.
Teach your child to set boundaries so that he can learn to take responsibility for his own actions.
